Hostage-taking in thuringian prison ended without bloodshed

The hostage-taker is a violent criminal with multiple convictions who, according to the police, has already been diagnosed with misogyny by several psychiatrists. The 52-year-old had already committed serious crimes in the GDR, said thuringia’s justice minister holger poppenhager (SPD) in suhl on saturday. The last time he was convicted of manslaughter was in 1994. 13 years in prison – until 2007. He had been in custody in suhl-goldlauter for allegedly stabbing his wife to death in erfurt in october 2012.
Secretary of the interior bernhard rieder said: "the correctional officer got through these hours with great bravery and rough nerves."It was not self-evident that people reacted so calmly in such extreme situations. The 26-year-old had been working in the prison for four years and knew that the 52-year-old was a dangerous offender. On the bloodless end of the hostage-taking, the secretary of state said: "we are all very happy and relieved."
The 26-year-old was on the way to a duty room at about 3 p.M., when the detainee overpowered her and forced her into the room, it cut her. He got a knife from the neighboring tea room – and then handcuffed the woman to the heater. After a war of nerves lasting several hours, the hostage-taker had been sentenced to death at 2:00 a.M.20 the door of the room opened – the hostage in the stranglehold with the knife threatening. At that moment, he was overpowered by SEK officers and arrested.
The man’s demands were "diffuse," nicolai said. At first he wanted to be transferred to another prison, then he didn’t want to be. For a while, there had been no contact with him at all. 80 officers were on duty; including a police negotiating team.
The minister said it was unlikely that the crime had anything to do with the long easter weekend. Several holidays in a row, such as christmas or easter, are considered critical days in prisons. As early as christmas 1993, prisoners at the suhl-goldlauter correctional facility had rebelled over overcooked dumplings.
On saturday, the leader of the thuringian left-wing party, bodo ramelow, criticized the situation in the country’s prisons. The act imprints and joins an unpleasant chain of events in the catches, he said on saturday to the news agency dpa. "Too little attention is paid to the psychological situation of the prisoners. This urgently needs to be improved," said ramelow.
The goldlauter correctional facility in suhl is a prison for men and has 332 places in jail. According to the correctional facility’s website, 310 of these will be in closed prisons and 22 in open prisons. At the moment there are 167 staff members. In thuringia there are seven correctional facilities with around 2,000 prison places.
